Flight operations resume as Labour suspends strike

Following the suspension of the strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), flight operations have resumed at Lagos airports.

Aviation unions, such as National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) and National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), had joined the strike called by NLC and TUC, thereby halting operations at the airport.

Air travellers were stranded at the airports, on Monday and part of yesterday as aviation workers were not on duty to facilitate scheduled flight operations.

According to the General Secretary of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, Olayinka Abioye, NLC and TUC, have been talking with the Federal Government over the desire for a new minimum wage.

“Proposals have been presented to the government and negotiations have been ongoing,” he said, believing that the Federal Government would surely respond.

The General Secretary of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Ocheme Aba, declared that all members had been mobilised to return to their offices, confirming the end of the strike.

“Due to the agreement with the presidency, the strike will be relaxed for one week starting from now to enable the tripartite committee to conclude deliberations on the minimum wage negotiation. So, flight operations will resume now, have resumed actually because all the blockages have been removed,” he said.
