No fewer than 80,000 persons in Okwuamarihe, Orsu Local Council of Imo State, have been displaced while about 5,000 houses submerged in the same area following the heavy flooding ravaging the area.
The victims have lost properties worth several millions of naira, and have deserted their ancestral homes, relocating to neighbouring communities.
Also, scores of women in Mbalagwa, Oguta Local Council of Imo State, led by Mrs. Rita Ohasonma, and wife of the monarch of the area, Ugoeze Chinyere Uba, on Thursday staged a peaceful protest at Government House, Owerri, over what they described as brutalisation and inhuman treatment they have encountered by a new alleged youths of the area forming insurgents called ‘Mbalagwa Boko Haram’, appealing on the state government and the law enforcement and security agencies to quickly come to their aid.
Speaking on the flooding, the monarch of the community, Mike Ebie, recalled that the problem was as a result of the poor job done on the road by a construction firm that handled it without drainages and manhole facilities.
He regretted that the flood devastated the area following intense rains that have left waterways to channel at homes, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
According to him, the problem had caused yellow fever on the people of the area, which led to the quick intervention of the World Health Organization and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist his subjects with medication, vaccines, blankets and others.
He appealed to both the Imo State and Federal Governments to compel the construction firm that handled the road to return to site and provide the drainage facilities.
