Adebayo Adeleke, the founder of the NFSP, has highlighted that food security is a critical pillar for Nigeria’s stability and growth.

Adebayo Adeleke, the driving force behind the Nigeria Food Security Project (NFSP), has highlighted that food security is not just a humanitarian issue but a crucial factor underpinning national security, economic stability, and social well-being. In Nigeria, food insecurity is emerging as a severe threat that could unravel the nation’s socio-economic fabric if not urgently addressed.

In an interview with The Guardian, Adeleke explained that the NFSP is a vital initiative aimed at tackling the pressing issue of food insecurity in Nigeria. This project stems from comprehensive research he conducted, focusing on indigenous logistics and culminating in a groundbreaking book on the subject.

Adeleke’s research shed light on the numerous challenges faced by Nigeria’s food supply chain, particularly the impact of illegal taxation on food commodity prices. This exploration was inspired by his firsthand observations of systemic issues on Nigerian roads and concerns raised by stakeholders during his research on indigenous supply chain methods.

“The findings from this research underscored the significant role that illegal taxation plays in inflating the prices of food commodities, thereby exacerbating food insecurity in Nigeria,” Adeleke stated. “The insights gained from this study provided a robust foundation for what would eventually become the Nigeria Food Security Project.”

In January 2023, the Nigeria Food Security Project (NFSP) was formally established, transforming the theoretical constructs of Adeleke’s research into a practical and impactful initiative. The NFSP was designed to tackle the multifaceted challenges of food insecurity by addressing systemic issues within Nigeria’s food supply chain.

“The project aims to mitigate the adverse effects of illegal taxation, streamline indigenous supply chain methods, and ultimately ensure that food commodities are more affordable and accessible to the Nigerian populace. Through a combination of advocacy, policy reform, and community engagement, the NFSP strives to foster a more equitable and sustainable food system in Nigeria,” Adeleke explained.

Adeleke further elaborated that the Nigeria Food Security Project stands as a testament to the power of rigorous research and its potential to drive meaningful change. By addressing the critical issues identified in his research, the NFSP continues to work towards a future where food insecurity is significantly reduced, and every Nigerian has access to affordable and nutritious food.

The NFSP represents a pivotal step in addressing Nigeria’s food insecurity, emphasising that ensuring food security is essential for maintaining national stability and promoting economic growth.
