A former vice chancellor at the University of Ibadan, Professor Emeritus Ayo Banjo, is dead.


The academic icon passed away in the early hours of Friday, May 24, following his recent 90th birthday celebration on May 2nd.

Renowned for his significant contributions to the development of the English Language curriculum in Nigeria and his advocacy for Nigerian varieties of English, Prof. Banjo served as the former Chairman of the Board of the National Universities Commission.

Additionally, he held positions as Pro-Chancellor at the Universities of Port Harcourt, Ilorin, and Ajayi Crowther.


Born into a scholarly family, Professor Banjo excelled academically throughout his life. After studying in Nigeria, he earned multiple Master’s degrees and a PhD in England and the United States.

Prof. Banjo’s scholarly legacy includes over 50 publications, including widely used textbooks in primary and secondary education.
