Foundation educates students on inclusion of children with disabilities

The IREDE Foundation (TIF) in partnership with The UPS Foundation has educated pupils of Opebi Grammar School in Lagos on inclusion towards child amputees.

The project, which was repeated in two other schools, Oriwu Model College, Lagos and Anthony Village High School, sought to impact the behavioral change of persons without disabilities by educating children between ages 8-16 about disabilities in public schools across the country starting with Lagos state.

The Foundations also distributed the IREDIANS Comic Book, Issues one and two, to all the students. So far 1331 copies of IREDIANS have been distributed.

Programmes Lead of the Foundation, Wuraola Kayode, said the book would educate the children on five types of disabilities. She listed them as visual impairment, amputees, cerebral palsy, autism and polio.

Kayode, who said the Foundation had given over 362 prosthetic limbs to children across Nigeria, called on students to treat children with disabilities equally.

Meanwhile, the vice principal of the school, Taiwo Agun, representing the Principal, applauded the Foundation for educating the school. She, therefore, urged students to avoid stigmatising children with disability, but show them love.

Programmes Associate, TIF, Vindy Joseph, explained that TIF helps provide children amputees with prosthetic limbs.

He stated that TIF aims to educate 10,000 children on disability, engage in school advocacy programmes and empower children amputees.

An SS2 student, Victory Iyagbon, lauded the foundation, said he learnt to not distance himself from PWDs.

He said every child should have a copy of the Iredians comic book as it teaches how to relate with children with disability.
