Foundation move to curb maternal mortality rate in FCT

Piqued by the statistics indicating that more than 30,000 women die daily during childbirth and childbirth complications, the Pregnancy Support Foundation (PSF) has scaled up sensitization of pregnant women in the FCT.

The foundation during its monthly community outreach in the Katampe Area of the FCT stressed that they aimed to contribute their quota to reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria.

The founder Adesua Oni while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the outreach programme stressed that their goal was to contribute their quota to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 targeted at preventing needless suffering from preventable death.

Oni said their focus is on key targets that boost the health of a country and its population.

She lamented that Nigeria’s Maternal Mortality Rate is one of the highest in the world, saying Nigeria accounts for the second-highest number of maternal and child deaths globally.

Oni noted that the community outreach tagged safe motherhood medical outreach, is targeted at different communities of low socio-economic status

She revealed that since commencement of the outreach programme in 2021, they have reached about 1,000 pregnant women and over 5000 women online.

The foundation provided health talks include Safe motherhood, getting support from others while pregnant, the importance of antenatal visits and facility-based delivery and healthy, affordable foods pregnant women should eat during pregnancy.

The highpoint of the outreach programme supported by Information Technologies Hub And Cynosure, includes medical checkups, distribution of free delivery packs and counselling sessions.

Oni, a nurse by profession, called for more partnerships to reach out to more pregnant women and urged community leaders to encourage pregnant women and their husbands to participate in the outreaches.

She said “This is the only way we will be able to impact more positively and achieve the SDGs- sustainable development goals of the World Health Organization. Together, we can make the world a better place and save our mothers and children from preventable deaths.”
