From house parties to big stages: DJ Dynamiite’s journey

DJ DynamiiteFrom spinning at small parties in Ontario, and playing for exposure to becoming Faces Magazine’s DJ of the Year in 2021, DJ Dynamiite is taking his passion for music and entertainment to new heights, and for him, “the sky is the starting point.”

The Canadian-based Nigerian DJ recalls his first encounters with music listening to local radio stations on his early morning rides to school in Lagos, performing for his church choir, playing the flute and drums and mastering the saxophone. Growing up in the world’s largest afrobeats hub, DJ Dynamiite had a front row seat to the evolution of Afrobeats in recent years and is actively taking part in spreading the culture beyond the country’s borders.

His first gig took place in Hamilton in 2017 where he performed alongside other DJs in the region through Top Boy Entertainment. Since then, he has nurtured his sound and established a name for himself in Ottawa and Toronto where he is popularly known as the “crowd controller.”

DJ Dynamiite reminisces on his childhood memories to evoke a nostalgic experience for his afrobeats audience in Canada. But his skillset goes beyond his Nigerian roots.

Besides afrobeats being his expertise, DJ Dynamiite has played for a range of audiences across North America and has developed an affinity for Caribbean music, dubbing both genres as “siblings.”

His ability to read the crowd and serve his audience everything they need at any point sets him apart. As he does before every show, and just as he did before performing with Koffee and BNXN on the Pier 17 stage in New York, he researched his audience, got ready for the crowd and said a prayer.

“I see every gig as a therapy session … in this case, I’m the therapist … once [the crowd is] active, I believe that it’s a successful therapy session.”

Before becoming the first Nigerian DJ to play at History Toronto during Davido’s “We Rise By Lifting Others” tour in June, DJ Dynamiite shared the stage with BNXN during Koffee’s Spring tour of North America and played on stages in Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Montreal and Winnipeg, to mention a few.

DJ Dynamiite is rounding up the year strong with his third tour, “The Transition Tour ” and looks to continue spreading his wings internationally in the new year. He anticipates a new mix and projects with household names in the industry. He also plans to further explore his entrepreneurial dispositions beyond entertainment and dive into his passion for fashion, “either a clothing line or a collaboration with a clothing line.”
