The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that plans are on to establish a School of Transportation within institutions of higher learning.

This is even as the corps inducted the Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatotyin Ogundipe, and 25 professors into the Special Marshal Unit of the FRSC.

The Corps Marshal of FRSC, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, said: “We want to ensure that school of transportation comes to reality in all tertiary institutions to teach courses like aviation, maritime, rail, road and other traffic management study for safer roads nationwide.”

The ceremony held at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

Oyeyemi, in his remarks, during the inauguration, said that the exercise would further sanitise the menace of dangerous driving within the campus environment and even outside the school.

According to him, the initiative will also be introduced to other institutions of learning to ensure more sanity among teenage drivers within campuses.

“The collapse of our transport systems has created a big challenge for us this time, especially in Lagos State.

“And we are working it out to ensure we attain safer roads at all cost. That is why we are involving the academics, the professors to partake not only in traffic control but also in the area of research to ensure our roads are safe and traffic free,” he said.

Oyeyemi added that all the institutions of learning could also get special marshal units as such development would reduce crashes and bring more enlightenment to the motorists.

He said that the FRSC would primarily involve individuals who have passion for humanity, are willing and ready to sacrifice their personal comfort and resources to ensure citizens enjoy life by ensuring a safe motoring environment.

Responding, the UNILAG VC, Ogundipe, thanked the corps marshal for giving them the opportunity to serve the motoring environment.

Ogundipe said that the partnership was to move the country forward in the transportation sector.

“This partnership is about how to move the society forward, that is, to reduce traffic within and outside our immediate environment.”

“I am sure this opportunity given to us will be fruitful by reducing recurrent traffic within our school gate and ensuring free flow of vehicular movement.

“We really appreciate the corps marshal for the opportunity as we propose to contribute our quota in sanitising our roads,” he said.

Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC, Olusegun Ogungbemide, in his remarks, urged the inductees to make proper use of the opportunity.
“This exercise is where commitment meets with passion, and I know the development will come to fruition as the institution is my alma mater,” he said.

The Guardian reports that 25 professors including the VC and six top management members of the University of Lagos were inducted into the special marshal unit of the FRSC.

This is to help curb excesses of dangerous driving and heavy traffic within the school’s environment.
