Fuel subsidy removal: Nollywood’s Amaka lends voice to plight of masses

Days after petrol pump price of N617 per litre was announced by the federal Government as the fuel subsidy removal comes into full effect, millions of Nigerians are in a state of discomfort and many have continued to vent their frustration.

Amidst the situation, Amaka Chukwujekwu, a Nollywood actress has cried out over the effect of the subsidy removal on the lives of Nigerians.

For her, “Nigerians had barely survived a horrendous 8 years of what had been described by many around the world as the most insensitive and regrettable political administration under President Muhammadu Buhari, only to wake up to another administration that started off on a very serious red flag.

“From what is known world over as a good democratic governance that is people centered, there should always be provisions that ensure citizens are not thrown into abysmal sufferings by any Government’s decisions and laws.

“Why do we have completely different scenarios in Nigeria. For how long will Nigerians continue to wallow in endemic poverty, lack, pains and sufferings in the midst of plenty, and yet no one gives a blink about what happens.

“At the wake of the current Government, subsidy removal was announced and from then cost of everything skyrocketed. Naira continues to loose value and strength to Dollar in the forex market. Cost of commodities continues to soar, industries are shutting down, income earning remains stagnant and job losses on the increase.

Transportation cost is something beyond description as petrol started selling at the pump price of N500 per litre and just few days ago, official price of petrol at N617 per litre was announced by the federal government.

“The reality is that Nigerians are not fairing well under this Subsidy removal, the people are bleeding and if not checked, suicide rate may skyrocket as people can no longer find the means to balance.

“Even if fuel subsidy will be removed, the Government should have been sensitive enough to make alternatives that would cushion the effect.

“Truly Nigerians are bleeding and who would help! A question for all of us”, she said.
