Funbi returns with my intentions

Funbi Emiola

Prominent Alternative RnB Singer, Funbi Emiola, professionally known as Funbi, has returned after a five-year hiatus, with a new smash single dubbed My Intentions. The song, which rehashes Funbi’s enigmatic loverboy style, is a cocktail of smooth RnB-fusion, intimate lyricism and soothing vocals.

Since his breakout in the music industry, with the 2016 smash hit, Hallelujah, Funbi soared as one of the most talented singers in the country. His last body of work, a 2018 EP dubbed, Serenade, marked the singer as one of the most vocally progressive male artistes of his generation.

In a chat with Weekend Beats, the singer explains that his father’s demise, the Coronavirus pandemic, among others, were obstacles to his journey in the industry.

He said, “A number of things really. I wanted some time to centre myself and find inspiration. During that period, COVID-19 happened, my dad passed. I have to admit there was a point I lost motivation; it was a trying time. What gradually brought me back to what I love are the messages and even prayers I kept getting from fans. Telling me what my music has done for them and how it makes them feel. I knew I had to get back to it.”

Revealing his intention behind the single, he said, “My intentions as the name suggests is a statement of intent. Being away for as long as I was, a void was created. I realized how much I’ve missed it. I used that as a metaphor to describe times when one is away from someone they love and only then realizing how much they mean to them and then going further to state that I’ll give everything to have that again.”

The Kwara-bred singer also assured fans that his distinct RnB/Neo-soul fusion would remain progressive and recognisable in all his forthcoming releases.

He assured fans, also, of being consistent with the music going forward, saying that “my aim is to keep creating and contributing to the sounds of my time to connect with people globally through my music as it is a universal language so let’s touch the universe.

I would also love to support other up and coming artists in the future however I can.”
