“Some families pursue gender selection to optimize their family planning,” Didiugwu elaborates. “They aim to manage family size effectively, avoiding financial strain and ensuring their ability to provide adequate emotional support to their children.”
Reflecting on her personal journey into gender selection advocacy, Didiugwu, a B.MLS graduate and founder of PAAM Clinic, shares her motivations: “My interest in gender selection stemmed from the absence of brothers in my own family. Hearing classmates’ anecdotes about their brothers’ experiences sparked a longing in me for that bond. Despite my parents’ satisfaction with daughters, I yearned for answers. Eventually, my brother arrived when my youngest sister was 19. Through perseverance and divine guidance, I sought and found the answers I sought.”
Discussing the cultural context of gender selection and its impact on her work, she notes: “Data indicates a higher demand for male children in many cultures, particularly in Nigeria. In some Igbo communities, a man’s status may be incomplete without a son. This cultural belief drives the preference for male offspring, resulting in a skewed demand ratio of 70:30 in favor of boys.”
