German govt commits to women, small businesses, technology development


Consul-General of Germany in Lagos, Weert Börner, has re-affirmed the country’s commitment to the development of women and small businesses in Nigeria.


Börner, who gave the assurance during the opening session of The Omniverse Summit in Lagos, yesterday, also canvassed the promotion of sustainable development in technology, saying that this will stimulate jobs in the ICT sector.

He said the summit created collaboration with the Nigerian ecosystem in helping to foster partnership between the government and the private sector.
According to him, Germany and Nigeria share a focus on technology generation, stating that there are many startups in Nigeria doing great exploits.

European Union (EU) Head of Cooperation in Nigeria, Massimo De Luca, said the EU shared the same digital agenda with Nigeria, stating that the union is working with the government on 5G and state-of-the-art technology facilities to enhance ICT promotion in Nigeria.


Former Director of Google West Africa, Juliet Ehimuan, said the country needed broadband connectivity and access to the Internet even as there has been adoption of Smartphone experience in the country.

She said there had also been a plethora of businesses coming online with the breath of content with capability and skills acquisition. Chairman of Innovation Support Network (ISN) Hubs, Charles Emembolu, said infrastructure gaps, among other challenges, had tested the life of technology in Nigeria, stating that Nigeria embraced the Internet over two decades ago.

Emembolu said Nigeria stands as a supporting collaboration to ICT development across the world, stating that the country has grown not in numbers but bounds facilitating the growth of startups.

Earlier in his remarks, Convener, The Omniverse, Obi Asika, said the summit was a start for collaboration within the ICT ecosystem to foster connection within the ICT space.
