Germany coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has announced his 27-man provisional squad for the Euro 2024 Championship with Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi and Mats Hummels, as well as Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry conspicuously missing from the list.

Also missing from the list are Adeyemi’s teammates, Julian Brand and Niklas Sule as the Germans look to make an impact at a major tournament for the first time in almost a decade.

Germany has failed to make it past the first knockout since Euro 2016, bombing out of the World Cup in Qatar in the group stages. As tournament hosts, they will be expected to make an impression and boast talents like Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and veteran Toni Kroos, who this year returned to the international fray.

The squad reflects the fact that Bayer Leverkusen have just claimed Bundesliga glory ahead of Bayern, who still have a strong representation. Wirtz has been one of their leading lights and will be joined by club colleagues Jonathan Tah and Robert Andrich. Aleksandar Pavlovic, with only 21 senior games for Bayern under Thomas Tuchel, is included ahead of his clubmate, Leon Goretezka.

Whilst Gnabry misses out Leroy Sane has made the cut. He is one of five Bayern players to get the call up. Arsenal star Kai Havertz, who has excelled in a false nine role at the Emirates, might be called upon to act as the focal point of his nation’s attack. So too could Deniz Undav, the Brighton loanee currently playing at Stuttgart. Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross has also been included.

With 27 names and four goalkeepers included, one stopper will drop out for the final 26-man squad.Germany faces Ukraine and Greece in friendlies next month ahead of the tournament on home soil. They will then take on Scotland in the opening game on June 14, before taking on Hungary five days later and finishing their group campaign against Switzerland.

If the Germans win their group they will face the runner-up of Group C – which features England. At the last Euros,it was the Three Lions who ended the hopes of their arch-rivals, securing a 2-0 win at Wembley.

In the provisional squad are four goalkeepers, Oliver Baumann, Manuel Neuer, Alexander Nubel and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, with the defenders, including Waldemar Anton, Benjamin Henrichs, Joshua Kimmich, Robin Koch, Maximilian Mittelstadt, David Raum, Antonio Rudiger, Nico Schlotterbeck and Tah.

The midfielders are Robert Andrich, Chris Fuhrich, Pascal Groß, Ilkay Gundogan, Toni Kroos, Jamal Musiala, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Leroy Sane and Florian Wirtz, while the forwards are Maximilian Beier, Niclas Fullkrug, Kai Havertz, Thomas Muller and Deniz Undav.
