Governor Sanwo-Olu at 59: Celebrating a visionary leader par excellence

In the words of English-American author and inspirational speaker, Simon Sinek, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.”

On the auspicious occasion of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s birthday, it is fitting to celebrate his exemplary leadership and the remarkable strides he has made in Lagos State. Since assuming office, Governor Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to transforming Lagos into a global megacity, addressing long-standing challenges while implementing forward-thinking policies that have profoundly impacted the lives of Lagosians, having lost himself in service to the people.

Little wonder why Mahatma Gandhi said “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

It suffices to say that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has been marked by numerous illustrious accomplishments across various sectors:

On Infrastructure Development

– Pen Cinema Flyover: The majestic completion of this major flyover in Agege has significantly improved traffic flow and reduced travel time for residents, enhancing connectivity between different parts of Lagos. Rehabilitation and reconstruction of major roads include:
– Ibrahim Taiwo Road: This critical road has been meticulously reconstructed to improve accessibility and ease of movement.
– Iyana-Ipaja Bridge: Essential repairs and upgrades to this bridge have alleviated traffic bottlenecks, enhancing commuter experience.
– Badagry Expressway: The ongoing reconstruction and expansion of this key highway aim to invigorate economic activities by improving access to the Badagry area.

On Transport

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has made significant strides in the transport sector, transforming Lagos into a more connected and efficient city. Some of his notable achievements in the sector include: Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines. The Blue Line is the construction of the LRMT Blue Line, a 27-kilometre rail project stretching from Marina to Okokomaiko, is aimed at easing traffic congestion and providing a reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport option. This project is a major step towards modernising Lagos’ transportation infrastructure.

The LRMT Red Line, another ambitious rail project, runs from Agbado to Marina and is designed to further alleviate traffic congestion and provide a seamless transit option for residents. This line is integrated with the existing Lagos-Ibadan Railway, enhancing connectivity within the state.

Talking about the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the expansion of the BRT system has been a priority, with new corridors being developed to improve the efficiency and reach of the BRT network. This includes routes such as the Oshodi-Abule Egba corridor, which has significantly reduced travel time for commuters. Introduction of modern, high-capacity BRT buses that are air-conditioned and equipped with Wi-Fi, providing a comfortable and convenient travel experience for Lagosians.

The workaholic Governor has taken up water transportation enhancements that sought an expansion of ferry services to provide alternative transport routes across the waterways of Lagos. This includes the construction of new jetties and the introduction of modern ferries, promoting water transportation as a viable and efficient option.

A more efficient traffic management and control, through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), is also in place; strengthening the capacity and efficiency of LASTMA to manage traffic flow and enforce traffic regulations, leading to improved road safety and reduced congestion. Installation of modern traffic lights and road signs across the state to enhance traffic management and ensure smooth vehicular movement, now makes the outlook of the state worthy of being called a smart city.

In Lagos, this same Lagos, one gets to also gets to experience the implementation of an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to manage traffic flow more effectively through the use of technology. This includes traffic cameras, sensors, and real-time data analytics to monitor and control traffic.

Governor Talk-and-do (if I may employ the cliche) has developed an integrated transport app providing real-time information on bus schedules, traffic conditions, and route planning, making commuting more efficient for residents; development of dedicated cycling lanes and pedestrian walkways to promote non-motorised transport options and ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to overhauling the transport sector has not only improved connectivity and efficiency but has also enhanced the overall quality of life for Lagosians. His strategic initiatives and visionary projects have positioned Lagos as a model for urban transport development in Nigeria and beyond.
