Group appeals to Buhari to tackle youth unemployment

unemploymentAs the world marks the International Youth Day, the United Youth for Democracy (UYD) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle youth unemployment through a specific legal framework.

UYD, in a statement issued by its President, Mr Kehinde Ojoawo, to commemorate the World Youth Day, said:

“ The youth should enjoy the rights to affordable and quality education, employment and empowerment as provided for in the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The group identified unemployment as the cause of the insecurity in Nigeria, urging the government to tackle the issue with utmost seriousness.

“Proliferation of militant groups in Nigeria is due to the fact that the youths are hungry and angry.

“Although, government is granting amnesty to militants, it has failed to address the root cause of insecurity by creating jobs,’’ it said.

The group further said lack of qualitative education for the youth also accounted for the army of unemployed young men and women roaming the cities.

It expressed regrets over the increase in social vices such as prostitution, cyber crime, examination and admission racketeering as well as drug trafficking and abuse, and called for measures to tackle them.
