International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has canvassed the launch of operation sweep away bad governance and weak leaders in 2023, to re-focus the zone for better governance.
The group maintained that it would be an “electoral taboo” to retain Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma beyond 2023. It revealed that it has investigated the leadership of the South East region and found that the only way to rejig the zone for purposeful regional and state leadership was to draw a homegrown electoral agenda that would begin this year.
“It is an incontestable fact that whoever will be voted as governor in the four South East states will be a strong determinant to the protection and safety of the entire region.
“Therefore, the fundamental agenda for Igbo people is to launch operation sweep away bad governance and weak and conformist leaders in 2023,” the group said.
Chairman of it’s Board, Emeka Umeagbalasi; Head of Democracy and Good Governance; Chinwe Umeche and Head of Campaign and Publicity, Chidimma Udegbunam, stated this in a statement made available to The Guardian yesterday in Enugu.
Specifically, the group expressed dissatisfaction about the quality of leadership and governance in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, insisting that the region deserved better than it was getting under the current governors.
“In Imo, for instance, it will be an electoral taboo to retain Uzodimma due to the insecurity. So, he should be swept away and all traces of his leadership legacy in the 2023 governorship election erased.
“In Ebonyi, there is the need to vote a bold, independent and service- inclined governor with clear-cut departure from the incumbent government. This is as it concerns security and safety of the people and their territories, boundaries, forests, farmlands, urban centres and their beliefs.
“In Enugu State, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi may have fixed some critical road network across the state, but the state remains largely insecure, unsafe and threatened. In the area of security and safety, Ugwuanyi’s philosophy is ‘anything goes’ as he ‘weeps in Enugu today and laughs in Aso Rock the next day’.
“Therefore, a new, bold and courageous leader is mandatory needed in Enugu come 2023,” the group stated.
