Group urges IGP, Sanwo-Olu to probe murder of youth leader

The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun and Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to order an investigation into the murder of Sheriff Ishola Salami.

Salami, a youth leader in Ojomu community, Ajiranland, Lagos, was gruesomely murdered at MOBA town, adjacent Ajiran, on Tuesday, April 18.

However, three months after the unfortunate incident, the police are yet to unravel those behind the murder. President of CHSR, Alex Omotehinse, told newsmen that the group was disturbed that the police are yet to demonstrate seriousness in the investigation of the callous murder.

He called on Lagos State government to compel the Police Command to unravel perpetrators of the callous murder. He said: “The apparent insensitivity of the police authority would however, appear deliberate or orchestrated in spite of a quest for justice by the immediate family of the deceased and concerned indigenes of the community.

“We received a copy of the petition dated May 8 and submitted to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zonal Command Headquarters, Zone II, Onikan, Lagos on the situation in Ojomu community, including a request for the probe into the murder of Salami (a.k.a Agboworin), who was a son of the late Bashorun of Ajiranland, Chief Ishola Salami.

Omotehinse said in spite of the quest for justice anchored on the statutory duty of the police, immediate family members of the deceased are totally broken by the apparent lack of commitment to bringing the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.

“The family of the deceased has been left to mourn their beloved son, husband and father without any glimmer of hope of getting justice since the law enforcement agencies; particularly the police charged with the responsibility of protection and conducting criminal investigation, have not been forthcoming.

“The concerned indigenes of Ojomu community and the immediate family of the deceased are, therefore, demanding diligent investigation that would lead to the unravelling of the masterminds and accomplices in the cold-blooded murder of Salami,” he said.

Omotehinse added that human rights community in Lagos State and by extension, Nigeria, are demanding that the new leadership of the Nigeria Police, headed by Egbetokun, should order credible investigation into the crisis in Ojomu community prior to the ugly incident of April 18, which led to the murder.
