Groups empower youths, women to address unemployment

Director General of FIIRO, Dr (Mrs) Jummai Tutuwa Adamu

The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) has partnered with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Region 36) to empower youths and women with skills to reduce unemployment in the country.

The youths and women were trained in cassava bread baking and confectioneries production technologies in Lagos for three days.

The Director General, FIIRO, Dr Jummai Tutuwa Adamu, said the training was a result of the institute’s research and development efforts at developing cassava bread.

He said Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava in the world, hence, the need to go into research on how to utilise the abundant resources to create jobs.

“We have a lot of cassava, but only a few people can use it to produce different types of products and a lot of it is being wasted, especially on the farm because of lack of preservation. So we are trying to bring up another research on how to preserve raw cassava even on the farm,” she said.

Adamu said when cassava bread is fully in existence, it will bring down the cost of bread because it is in abundance.

“Once people go into massive production of cassava bread, the price of bread will come down,” she said.

She said the training will lead to massive job creation and encourage the youths and women to develop an entrepreneurial culture towards self-employment, which is in tandem with the Renew Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Adamu noted that all over the world, entrepreneurship has been acknowledged as the surest way for massive job creation.
