Gunmen have killed the Administrative Secretary of Malumfashi Local Council in Katsina State, Ibrahim Aliyu.

The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred Sunday night at about 8.15 p.m. after the assailants surrounded a mosque where the deceased and other Muslim faithful were praying.

A source in the area said the terrorists had earlier gone to the residence of the deceased without meeting him and had inquired from his family members where he was.

He said the family members didn’t give the terrorists a satisfactory answer about Aliyu’s whereabouts. Thereafter, they left his house and headed to the mosque during evening prayers. They waited till he emerged and then shot him dead.

The source said the deceased had been among key individuals working for peace and stability in the council, which had come under attacks by terrorists in recent times.

Describing the incident as an assassination, the source said it might not be unconnected with some of the deceased’s efforts at tackling insecurity in the area.

The source added that the deceased had since been buried according to Islamic rights, while several public office holders within and outside the council had visited his residence to express their sympathies.

Spokesperson for the police in the state, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, was yet to respond to inquiry on the matter as of press time.
