As police trail killers of Enugu ex-judge
Unidentified gunmen, at the weekend, killed Chief Provost of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Imo State, Okiemute Mrere.
Mrere, who was until his assassination, a Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI), was reportedly shot at close range.
Sources said he was in a Hilux vehicle on motion, on Saturday night along the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road, when the assailants closed in on him and shot him to death.
Some persons were said to have found his body in a bush on Sunday morning and reported the matter to the security agents.
They said his service pistol was found besides his body, while the vehicle he was travelling in was riddled with bullets.
Imo State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bala Elkana, a Superintendent of Police (SP), could not be reached for his comment, but the NIS office in Owerri confirmed the incident.
The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred the same day ex-Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak, was assassinated close to the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.
MEANWHILE, the Police in Enugu have disclosed that they are on the trail of the killers of a retired Judge of Enugu State, Justice Stanley Nnaji, who was murdered around 6:00p.m. in Enugu on Sunday.
The deceased, an indigene of Mbu in Isi-Uzo Council of the state, was shot severally besides the Enugu Diagnostics Centre near Ebeano Tunnel after his assailants double-crossed and dragged him out of his car.
The aggressors, who drove a red Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), also took away his vehicle.
Confirming the incident, the Enugu State Police Command, assured that the culprits must be arrested.
A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, had ordered a vigorous manhunt for the killers.
“The deceased was rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival and his remains deposited in the mortuary for autopsy,” he said.
Assuring that no stone would be left unturned to find perpetrators of the crime, Aliyu urged residents of the state to remain law-abiding, vigilant and assist the police with useful information that could lead to their arrest and prosecution.
