Healthy potted houseplant in downpour

Of course houseplants, like other plants, flourish during the rainy season as it greatly improves their ability to take in CO2 and nutrients for photosynthesis, which promotes healthy plant growth, but excess rainwater can cause considerable damage to them. This is because the plants stand in stagnant water for a long period of time.

Implications Of Excess Rainwater On Houseplant
. Wilting
. Yellowed leaves
. Precipitation
. Failure to produce new growth
. Mossy green soil
. General poor health

How To Protect Your Houseplants From Excess Rainwater
. Move Your Pots – When it rains too heavily to the stage where your pot is flooding, it is imperative to move your potted plants away from the rain to avoid soil erosion that could damage the plant.

. Don’t water – After constant downpour, don’t bother watering when it doesn’t rain, just check the topsoil and water the plants only if you feel that it looks dry or the leaves are sagging.

. Pull out Weeds – Ensure to pull out the weeds after it has rained and the soil is moist to remove harmful weeds which can cause the plants to break.

. Remove Damaged Parts –
Aside from erosion, plants can be damaged from heavy wind and storms thereby increasing the risk of the plant getting snapped and destroyed during heavy rains if it has damaged parts. So it is imperative to remove all the dry and damaged parts from houseplant and keep them streamlined.

. Loosen Topsoil –Rainwater easily finds its way down the soil, however, ensure that the soil absorbs the water by mixing up and losing topsoil in your potted plant. This is because sometimes, the downpour water may not seep into the soil, which may lead to moss and algae.

. Ensure that the potted plants have a good drainage system so excess water can flow out easily. This is because precipitation can slowly drown your seedlings and a torrential downpour has the potential to wash away germinating seeds, damage the delicate foliage of young plants.
