Worried by the rising spate of insecurity in Delta State, particularly incessant attacks by herdsmen across various communities, the Delta State House of Assembly, yesterday, called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to act swiftly by directing relevant security agencies to rise to the challenge.

The resolution came following a motion raised under matters of urgent public importance by Spencer Owhofa, a member representing Ughelli North 2 State constituency.

Owhofa, at the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor, noted that the motion had become imperative, following a recent attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on residents of Uwheru Community where a farmer was brutally murdered by suspected herdsmen, as well as inflicting injuries on several others.

In the motion, which was seconded by the member representing Ughelli North 1, Matthew Omonade, unanimously adopted by the lawmakers, the Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has been asked to direct the Commissioner of Police and other relevant government agencies to investigate, arrest and bring to book the herdsmen, who invaded the community on Monday, February 5, 2024, in the local council where one Ikupeni was killed during the yearly l fishing festival at Emuede lake.

Also, the lawmakers, apparently unhappy with the development, asked that security measures be beefed up in various localities through regular 24-hour patrol by a joint operation of the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, local vigilantes, as well as community security corps.

While saying that the development, if left on checked, could result to an unprecedented breakdown of law and order in the state, the lawmakers asked security agencies in the state to ensure that the continuous killing, rape, attack and harassment of residents of the state is stopped.

Meanwhile, the new Delta State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwanda Olufemi, yesterday, promised to put in place security mechanisms to enthrone the reign of peace and security of life and property at all times.

Addressing journalists shortly after assuming office, Olufemi assured Deltans, residents and non-residents, that the Command under his watch would ensure that the state becomes uncomfortable for criminals.

Olufemi, who assumed duty as the 22nd Commissioner of Police in the state took over from AIG Wale Abass, who was transferred to Police Force Headquarters Abuja, disclosed that he came to the state with the mandate to carry out basic police duties for people to sleep with their two eyes closed.

The 58-year-old police boss tasked the youths not to allow themselves to be used for any act of criminality, advising the public to always cooperate with the police and other security agencies for a crime-free society.
