How Nigeria can reduce poverty among 64m children, by UNICEF

UNICEF

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised the alarm over increasing poverty among Nigerian children and suggested solutions to reduce child poverty among 64 million kids that are multidimensionally poor.

According to UNICEF, lack of education, health, water and sanitation, information and housing, as well as child protection, force children into poverty.

During a media dialogue in Gombe yesterday, social policy specialist for Bauchi Field Office, Dr Auta Yusuf, called on the media, government and communities to reduce child poverty.

Also speaking, a lecturer at the Federal University, Kashare, Dr. Ali Dankumo, said the menace could be reduced by providing quality education, water, good healthcare services, access to good shelter, child protection and social safety nets.

He added that huge investment in marginalised households and communities, as well as promotion of child-friendly policies and legislation can pull out millions of children from poverty.
