HURIWA tells govt to declare killer herders as terrorists

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Federal Government to declare killer herdsmen as herdsmen, just as it did bandits.

In a statement, yesterday, by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the civil rights advocacy group condemned the invasion of communities in Logo Local Council of Benue State by suspected herders, who forcibly displaced autochthonous dwellers.

According to Joseph Anawah, a community leader and former media aide to an ex-governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam, herders invaded the communities with more than 1,000 cows and settled at the Tse Azaye, Tse Agah, Tse Getim and Tse Iosun communities in Tombo ward.

HURIWA urged security agents to arrest the militiamen terrorising the North Central state and prosecute them forthwith to send a clear signal that forcible takeover of land won’t be condoned.

An international organisation had, some years ago, tagged Nigeria’s rifle-wielding herders as one of the top terrorist groups in the world.
