I have had to overcome gender biases as a skincare entrepreneur- Onyeka Melinda Eze

Onyeka Melinda Eze, a visionary beauty entrepreneur, is redefining standards in the skincare industry through her groundbreaking brand, Idozi Skincare. With a fervent passion for science and a deep-rooted belief in the power of nature, Eze has overcome numerous challenges, including gender biases, to establish herself as a pioneering force in the beauty world.


Driven by her love for skincare and armed with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Benin, Onyeka embarked on a journey to merge science with tradition to curate transformative skincare experiences. Her brand, Idozi Skincare, stands as a testament to her dedication to evidence-based solutions and empowering individuals to embrace their authentic beauty.

Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, she shares: “I’ve always been a skincare enthusiast since I was little. I had the habit of comparing skincare ingredients. In my drawer of clothes, as a child,I remember keeping packs of skincare products and comparing ingredients. At the time, I didn’t know what those ingredients were or their function. Also, I have always been of the belief that nature provides everything we need. I was told that my great grandfather was a herbal gynaecologist, so you could say herbal medicine is in the blood. Coming to the moment that I thought I could really do this was during NYSC, I attending a natural skincare programme and they asked everybody what they hoped to do with the knowledge, they gained from the session. My answer at the time was that I was learning for personal knowledge but when I went back home I sat back and really reflected. That was where it hit me, that I could really go into entrepreneurship. I always had the passion for skincare, why not use it to bless others”.

Idozi Skincare, a proudly Nigerian brand, derives its name from the Igbo language, meaning ‘To Fix,’ symbolizing its mission to address skincare concerns naturally. Onyeka emphasizes, “Our philosophy at Idozi Skincare is to make you look and feel young.”
Through uplifting messaging and a focus on celebrating individuality, the brand aims to instill hope and confidence in its customers.

Onyeka’s educational background in Biochemistry and her certification in anti-aging skincare have been fundamental pillars in shaping Idozi Skincare’s formulation and development process. With a deep understanding of biological processes, Eze approaches skincare from a scientific perspective, ensuring the efficacy and safety of her products.

Despite her remarkable achievements, the gifted entrepreneur acknowledges the challenges she has faced as a female entrepreneur in the skincare industry. “One significant hurdle has been overcoming gender biases and stereotypes,” she reveals. Despite encountering skepticism and doubt, Eze remains steadfast in asserting her expertise and credibility with unwavering confidence.

Breaking into a market dominated by established brands has been another formidable task for Onyeka. As a smaller, emerging brand, she has had to find creative ways to differentiate Idozi Skincare and carve out its own space in the industry.
