ICAN seeks inclusion in economic council to strengthen policy implementation

The 59th president of ICAN, Dr. Innocent Okwuosa

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has urged the Federal Government to enlist the association as member of the National Economic Council (NEC).

It stated that the call for the expansion of membership of NEC through inclusion of lCAN is crucial given the pivotal role the institute plays in the economy.

The President of lCAN, Dr. Innocent Okwuosa, made the call during a visit to the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, in Abuja.

Okwuosa said there is a need for the establishment of a Monetary and Fiscal Policy Coordinating Committee or the incorporation of policy coordination into NEC’s mandate to champion the actualisation of the synergy between monetary and fiscal policies of the Federal Government.

Okwuosa disclosed that lCAN through its symposium and the mid-year economic discourse often provide critical analysis of the national budget and offer recommendations that have influenced budget policy decisions, including the adoption of January-to-December budget calendar.

“The 2024 ICAN Budget Symposium, declared open by the Minister of Budget and National Planning addressed the importance of transparency and efficiency in state budget management,” he said.

Responding, Shettima lauded ICAN’s achievements and its principled stance on issues. He acknowledged Taiwo Oyedele’s commendable leadership of the tax reform committee, pledging to collaborate with the national assembly to review the ICAN Act.

He assured the institute of government’s alignment with global standards, promising to attend the 54th yearly accountants’ conference.
