IGP warns senior officers against extorting personnel over promotional interview

IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has warned senior police officers presiding over promotional interviews across the country to desist from collecting bribes from junior officers.

The warning followed widespread allegations that presiding senior police officers were demanding and collecting N30,000 from individual police Inspectors aspiring to be promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

Confirming the development in a statement yesterday, the Force spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the action of the senior officers was unethical and unprofessional, adding that a helpline to report such corrupt acts had been rolled out.

He said: “The Nigeria Police Force is gravely concerned by reports of alleged extortion and unethical conduct surrounding the ongoing promotion interviews for Inspectors aspiring to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police. Such behaviour undermines the core values of our institution and will not be tolerated.

“The IGP strongly condemns any form of corruption in the promotion process and urges all officers to report any instances of misconduct promptly and directly to the IGP through the dedicated hotline at 09077120194 or to the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) at 08037168147.”
