Nigeria’s flag will fly at full mast in Berlin, Germany, when No U-Turn, the documentary film by Nollywood filmmaker Ike Nnaebue takes centre stage for a world premiere at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival, otherwise called Berlinale.
The 2022 edition of the festival takes place from February 10 to 20, but the world premiere of Nnaebue documentary film, a co-production between Nnaebue’s Passion 8 Communications, Germany, Steps from South Africa and Don Edkins from France, will take place on Monday, April 14, at Panorama Main Premiere Cinema-Zoo Palast 1, Berlin.
Produced with funding by the coveted Berlinale World Cinema Fund (WCF), Nnaebue’s documentary was one of the 14 projects from 14 countries that received funding recommendations from the WCF Jury in 2020.
Born and raised in Ojoto in Idemmili local council of Anambra State, Ike had described his winning the grant as a win for the Nollywood industry and as a fulfilment of his vision and dream as a filmmaker.
The director of the 2013 advocacy movie A Mothers Fight, his directorial debut, No U-Turn is about West Africans trying to migrate to Europe through what is now known as the back door— the trans-Saharan highway and by crossing the Mediterranean by road despite knowing the dangers ahead.
The huncho of Love Portion, a creative hub located in the Sangotedo area of Lagos, Nnaebue revealed in an earlier interview that his career ambition is to be one of the top five most successful African filmmakers in 2025.
He also said he’s interested in setting up more structures that will be devoted to supporting Nollywood and filmmakers in the continent.
