Imo State government has commenced installation work for night and weather landing facilities at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.

It has also commenced reconstruction of the Imo International Conference Centre, Owerri.

The centre, which was alleged to have cost the Rochas Okorocha administration over N2 billion to construct, collapsed over a year ago. However, the Hope Uzodimma administration demolished the collapsed structure and performed a fresh ground breaking.

The state government is yet to disclose the cost of executing the two projects.

Visiting the airport site, at the weekend, Uzodimma, represented by Commissioner for Special Projects, Stanley Obidiegwu, said installation of the navigational equipment and aviation devices would guarantee safety and 24-hour landing operations, giving the airport an international status.

Obidiegwu said: “The idea is predicated on providing facilities and services for a safe, warm and welcoming environment that offers every guest a pleasant experience. We are talking about the impact of our growth plan and economic recovery. It’s like building a house. We must set out the plan, set out the pillars, design what is implementable, and that is what we are doing.”
