‘Indigenous languages risk extinction’

Former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, Chairman of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chiedu Ebie, Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO) of Zenith Bank Plc, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, and others have committed over N100 million to resuscitate and preserve Ika language.

Okowa donated the sum of N30 million, Onyeme donated N30 million, Ebie N10 million, Onyeagwu N20 million and others towards the N1 billion fundraising for Ika Language and Research Centre.


Speaking at the funds raising held at the weekend during the Second Founder’s Day Celebration and Fund Raising for Ika Language and Cultural Research Centre of the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, Delta State,

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed fear that various Nigerian indigenous languages are facing threats of extinction, saying: “We may lose our mother tongues sooner than expected unless urgent steps are taken to preserve them.”

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Monday Onyeme, commended UNIDEL for working to preserve the Ika language with the establishment of Ika Language and Cultural Centre.

He said: “I am particularly impressed by the initiative to establish an Ika Language and Cultural Centre. This is highly commendable because nationally our various indigenous languages are facing the threat of extinction.”
