INEC urges women to play more active roles in nation’s politics

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State has restated its commitment to ensure active participation of women in Nigeria’s electoral process, especially during the February general elections.

The INEC Deputy Director in charge of Civil Society Organisations Division, INEC headquarters, Abuja, Ndidi Okafor, gave the assurance, yesterday, during a town hall meeting with women groups and gender-focused civil society organisations in Awka.

Okafor reaffirmed that the Commission is working to see more women playing active roles in political activities in the state than just singing and dancing for politicians.

While lamenting the increasing waves of violence perpetrated by the youths before, during and after elections, she attributing it partly to nonchalant attitude of parents, particularly mothers.

According to her, women can do more than dancing, singing and praising politicians, even as she asked why woman cannot emerge as national chairperson of a major political party other than women leader.

“Women are well educated and intellectually healthy to also contribute to governance,” she said.
