Just when Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, had concluded plans to field a three-man attack comprising Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface and Ademola Lookman in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, the news broke yesterday that Osimhen has been knocked out of the games by a nagging injury.

The Eagles’ camp at the weekend celebrated Osimhen’s return to action as the Napoli striker played some minutes in his team’s game against Lecce on Sunday.
But reports from the Italian team revealed that the 25-year-old forward’s injury relapsed from that game and he would now be out for four weeks.

In an alert yesterday: “Camp update: Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen is injured and out for four weeks. Super Eagles’ Coach Finidi George has called up Enugu Rangers’ left back Kenneth Igboke for the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Rep,” the Super Eagles announced in a post on X yesterday.

The Super Eagles will host South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matchday three fixture at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on June 7 and travel to Cote d’Ivoire to meet Benin Republic on June 10.
