Int’Day of the Boy Child: Illuminating the path to equality and protection

As the world celebrates the International Day of the Boy Child, it is imperative that we acknowledge the significance of safeguarding our boys and ensuring they receive equal protection, education, and healthcare.

While commendable efforts have been made to protect and empower the girl child, it is crucial to address the challenges faced by boys as well. The well-being and development of our boys are equally vital for fostering a balanced and inclusive society.

Dr Nimi Ekere states that every boy deserves access to healthcare, shaping their dreams and enabling them to reach their full potential.

In Nigeria, and in many parts of the world, we are confronted with a stark reality. According to the 2015 UNICEF report, approximately 1 in 10 boys in Nigeria experiences abuse before the age of 18. However, it is important to recognize that these numbers likely represent only reported cases, and the actual prevalence is likely much higher. This realization compels us to understand the urgent need to protect our boys and create a safe environment that nurtures their growth and well-being.

She adds that the protection of our boys extends beyond addressing abuse; it encompasses providing them with access to quality healthcare and education. Currently, Nigeria faces significant challenges in providing basic healthcare services to boys. Many lack access to essential medical care, hindering their overall well-being and impeding their ability to fulfill their potential.

To protect and empower our boys, we must adopt a multifaceted approach that involves various stakeholders. Here are actionable steps we can take as a society:

1. Raise Awareness: Illuminate the challenges faced by boys, including the lack of access to basic healthcare services. Educate communities, parents, and caregivers about the importance of safeguarding boys’ health, fostering a culture of protection and support.

2. Strengthen Child Protection Systems: Establish robust child protection mechanisms that encompass healthcare services. Develop reporting mechanisms, train healthcare professionals on child protection, and ensure swift action against perpetrators.

3. Promote Gender Equality: Advancing gender equality benefits both boys and girls. Advocate for an inclusive society that challenges harmful gender stereotypes, ensuring equal opportunities and support for all children to thrive.

4. Improve Access to Healthcare: Prioritize efforts to ensure boys have access to quality healthcare services. Address barriers such as poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and limited healthcare facilities, ensuring boys receive the medical attention they need to grow and thrive.
5. Engage Boys as Advocates: Empower boys to become advocates for their own health and the health of their peers. Cultivate a generation that values the importance of healthcare, encouraging boys to champion their rights and advocate for equitable access to medical services.

On this International Day of the Boy Child, let us stand together to protect and empower our boys, ensuring their health and dreams know no boundaries.

As we celebrate the International Day of the Boy Child, let us reaffirm our commitment to protect and empower our boys. By creating a society that values the well-being, education, and healthcare of every child, regardless of gender, we pave the way for a brighter future for all. Together, we can build a nation where boys and girls grow up safe, healthy, and equipped to contribute positively to our society.
