Nigerian intelligence services have denied reports alleging a Northern Senator’s involvement in terrorism and banditry, while uncovering a plot to sow discord between Senators and the public.

According to top officers who spoke anonymously in a report published by PRNigeria, investigations revealed the newspaper report accusing the Senator to be “a fabrication.” They emphasised that “no senator is currently under investigation or prosecution for sponsoring terrorism or banditry.”

Furthermore, the officers, according to the report, revealed their discovery of a scheme aimed at “pitching Senators of Northern extraction against the masses.” This “hatchet job,” they say, is orchestrated by “unscrupulous elements” and also targets creating division within the security services themselves.

One officer explained, “Our discreet investigation has unmasked those instigating the baseless story in the media. We are not currently investigating any Senator for sponsoring terrorism.”

Another source, a senior military officer, identified the mastermind of the media report as a “retired security officer still retained in service.” This individual, from a state in the middle belt, is accused of aiming to “denigrate Northern Senators.”

The officer added, “We are reaching out to security agencies to ensure they find those behind the sponsored negative campaign. This person cannot be allowed to pitch groups of people against Nigerians.”
