The lawyers of the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have asked President Bola Tinubu to approve the release of their client from detention.

Members of the legal team have also submitted a list of nine judgements to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja.

Barrister Nnaemeka Ejiofor, who is leading Kanu’s legal team, on Thursday said the judgements were from both the domestic and international courts directing the release of the IPOB leader.

“The decision to forward all the pronouncements was in response to the statement credited to the AGF that he was not aware of Kanu’s case and that his fate would be resolved by the court,” Ejiofor told journalists.

“We, therefore, call on President Bola Tinubu to release Kanu and respect the various judgements, directing his release.”

Fagbemi, who is also the Minister of Justice, in May said that the offence for which the detained IPOB leader is being charged is a difficult one which can only be resolved by a competent court of law.

According to the legal luminary, there was a huge difference between Kanu’s case and that involving the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore.

Kanu’s legal team in April threatened to pull out of the trial if the Department of State Service (DSS) refuses unfettered access to their client who is being held in its custody.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, a counsel on Kanu’s legal train, Alloy Ejimakor, said the legal team will not participate in any process that would bring injustice to the IPOB leader.

“We will not be part of murdering justice in a Nigerian court over the head of Nnamdi Kanu. We will refuse to be part of the programmed injustice,” he said.

He decried the DSS’s denial of access to Kanu by his legal team, making it difficult to properly prepare for his defence in the terrorism charge slammed against him by the Nigerian government.

Kanu who has been standing trial on various charges, however, debunked media reports and insinuations that he dictated to the court the conditions on which to continue his trial.

Ejimakor, in a statement marked, ‘Corrigendum: Mazi Nnamdi Kanu never gave any conditions for his trial, as some media outlets had reported,’ said that his reaction was a sequel to media publications “purporting that, at the last hearing of his case on April 17, 2024, Kanu had given conditions for his trial.”

Kanu who is currently standing trial for terrorism was arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria in the year 2021.
