Ahead of a pivotal European Council meeting, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed Parliament, outlining Italy’s foreign policy priorities. The meeting, set for later this week, will focus on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.

PM Meloni welcomed Sweden and Finland’s NATO accession, denouncing Russia’s hostility towards these nations and the Baltic states. She voiced opposition to France’s proposal to deploy ground troops in Ukraine, warning against potential escalation. Advocating for enhanced European defence capabilities, Meloni urged for increased funding and proposed a balanced NATO structure with American and European pillars.

The Italian leader reaffirmed support for Ukraine, mentioning plans to host the inaugural G-7 summit in Kyiv on the invasion’s second anniversary. She criticised Russia’s negotiation tactics and condemned the illegitimate elections in Ukrainian territories, paying tribute to the late dissident Alexei Navalny.

Meloni’s statements came amidst domestic political discord, particularly following Deputy PM Matteo Salvini’s remarks that seemingly validated the Russian elections. However, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani clarified that the government’s stance remains firm and unified.

The Prime Minister also highlighted Italy’s role in addressing the Israel-Hamas conflict at the EU Council, advocating for a renewed two-state solution and Europe’s significant involvement. She condemned Hamas for instigating the conflict and criticized the reluctance to acknowledge this, which she attributed to underlying anti-Semitism.
