It’s a great privilege to represent my country – Amusan

World Record holder in 100m hurdles, Tobiloba Amusan, says it is an honour and privilege to compete at the 13th African Games, which ended yesterday in Accra, Ghana.

Tobi ‘Express’, as she is fondly called, grabbed two gold medals, including the 4x100m relay on Day 3 of athletics event.

“I run for a living, and this is a national assignment. I see no reason why I shouldn’t be here. I don’t know why people expect me to choose the competitions that I need to compete,” she told AFN Media in Accra.

“I compete when it’s time to compete and I am representing myself, Nigeria and Africa as a whole.” she added. Amusan won gold in the women’s 100m Hurdles final clocking 12.89 seconds to defeat Sidonie Fiadanantsoa, who finished second in 13.19sec and Zimbabwe’s Ashley Tinashe Kamangirirain, who was third in 13.59sec. However, Amusan got a yellow card for a false start owing to the noise from the crowd in the stadium.

With the victory in Accra, Amusan became the first high hurdler to win three straight gold medals in the history of the African Games, having won the last two editions in Congo Brazzaville and Rabat, Morocco. Amusan later anchored the Team Nigeria Athletics women, to win gold in the 4×100m.
