IWD: UN POLAC, advocate women inclusion in peace building efforts

United Nations, Positive Livelihood and Awards Centre, (UN-POLAC), has called for the inclusion of women in peace building efforts for lasting peace.

Director, Women and Children, UN-POLAC, Mrs. Cynthia Amamaka-Obiorah, made call in a message to commemorate the 2024 International Women’s Day, themed ‘Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress’.

She said the IWD is a day dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all over the world, but also a time to reflect on areas women’s visibility is still lacking and renew our commitments to advocating for gender equality.

“The United Nations Organization has declared the theme for International Women’s Day, 2024 as ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,’ as published on their official website, and the colour for the celebration as Purple.

“Indeed, how true this is specifically, considering current world events, as conflict continues to affect many different regions. Urgent action is needed to ensure that women are part of peacebuilding, and that their contributions are visible and valued. Women do groundbreaking work for justice, peace, and security,” she said

She said March as the IWD is dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all over the world, but also a time to reflect on areas women’s visibility is still lacking and renew our commitments to advocating for gender equality.

“Women do groundbreaking work for justice, peace and security yet, they continue to be sidelined in formal peace processes.

“Women’s inclusion in peacebuilding processes is essential for long-term success. This is proven. Gender-equal participation contributes to longer, and lasting peace after conflict.

“Today, let’s all be intentional about recognizing and honoring the contributions and achievements of women. Here’s to the fearless women, the resilient women on International Women’s Day! May you continue to lead with courage, speak with conviction, and live with purpose.

“To all women, all over the world and Nigeria in-particular, happy International Women’s Day! We at United Nations POLAC wish you a day of joy and laughter, empowerment, and recognition on International Women’s Day,” she concludes.
