Kano commissioner empowers 1, 275 youths, women

The Kano State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, yesterday restored hope to 1, 275 young men and women with empowerment tools in his Kabo local council.

Those, who benefitted from the magnanimity of Garo, popularly known as Sarki Yanki, include students, Ulamas, Hisbah officials and some female politicians.


Items donated are 5 saloon cars, 61 motorcycles, 10 generating sets and a cash sum of N10, 000 each to 10 mosques in his Kabo constituency.

Other items distributed include bags of fertilisers, pumping machines with N5, 000 each to 200 farmers, N20,000 scholarship each to 109 students, N10, 000 each to 199 women as start up capital, sewing machines and a poultry farming package, and 799 beneficiaries of various skill acquisition programmes supported with N10, 000 each.

Speaking during the empowerment ceremony, the commissioner explained that the empowerment was part of commitment to positively touch lives in the communities.


Garo disclosed that the various items disbursed were meant to improve agricultural growth and education of less privileged in the rural communities.

According to Garo, “we are empowering 1, 275 young men and women whom were trained in various skills acquisition programmes. We are also donating 5 cars to various associations in Kabo Council; Hisba, Ulamas, former councillors and some female politicians. The aim is to contribute to the growth and development of our communities.”

Wife of Kano State Governor, Dr. Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje, who launched the empowerment programme, applauded the contribution of the commissioner towards elevating poverty and better the life of less privileged.


Ganduje charged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items and funds for the desired goal of making them self-reliant.

“Today is an excellent day for us because we have about 1, 275 beneficiaries in terms of empowerment we have greater percentage of our elected officers and appointees.


“I do hope that the beneficiaries are going to use this package wisely, engage seriously and ensure that their businesses grow,” she said.

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, who was also present at the event, commended efforts of the commissioner and also urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items.
