BACK-TO-BASICS movement is also a response to the first fashion frenzy that dominated the apparel industry for years ‘Basic’ may have semi-negative connotations, but when it comes to fashion, take it as a compliment, think of simple classics that don’t shout for attention, but often become the backbone of an outfit or your wardrobe.


What makes ‘Back to Basic Collection unique, is open for interpretation, depending on the styles and designs adopted by Mr. Charles. Usually, the Back to Basic Collection designs are plain, never-trendy made to last, and re-worn over and over again. They curated the BACK to BASIC Collection 2024, a collection of clothing that emphasizes quality and simplicity and rejects the current model of quick trends. The Nigerian-based fashion brand is rethinking every part of what it means to be a fashion brand today and refashioning it with sustainability at the core.

We spoke to Mr. Charles about his journey putting this collection together how his brand approach the design process and why, for them at MADE CULTURE, starting a clothing brand was a vehicle to make a positive impact.

The brand through the Back to Basic Collection wanted to curate something that could have a positive impact on every woman and the environment. We had that insight, but coming from a very modest and humble background in Nigeria. MR Charles had no idea how to do it, in his words “As a Brand, we just took one step and then another, and that’s essentially been the whole methodology throughout Back to Basic Collection.

Mr. Charles saw that there was a chance to create something of value for every woman, something that represents the simplicity of the modern woman, the Back to Basic Collection was therefore created to build a tight relationship with potential customers.

The Collection’s main drive is focusing on classic simple designs that define the grace and beauty of every woman.

According to Mr. Charles, while discussing the acceptability of the brand noted that initially, women became curious about the style and look of the collection, but when they get a chance to learn about the concept behind each design and the purpose of the collection they become more interested and that’s the brand and Back to Basic collection built a long term relationship with many of its customers. So from the collection, the first drive is interest and the second drive is retention.
