Kwara Assembly Leader, Olawoyin, dies two months to poll, gov mourns

Majority Leader, Kwara State House of Assembly, Abubakar Olawoyin, has passed on, two months to the states’ elections, in which he was standing for re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed March 11, 2023 for governorship and House of Assembly elections

Olawoyin, who represented Ilorin Central in the Assembly, passed on yesterday at the age of 56, while battling an undisclosed illness.

Chairman, House Committee on Information, Youth, Sports and Tourism, Awolola Ayokunle, confirmed the death of Olawoyin in a statement, yesterday.

The funeral prayer and the burial held at 4.00pm in Ilorin, the state capital.


According to INEC rules, if a candidate dies before election into a legislative house, the political party may conduct a fresh primary within 14 days and submit the name of a new candidate to the commission.

Kwara APC Chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, expressed shock at the death of “one of our political faithful,” adding that he was too saddened to start any discussion on his replacement less than 24 hours after his death.
KWARA State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has commiserated with the family.

“I commiserate with the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari; his immediate and extended family, the entire people of Magaji Ngeri/Ilorin Central State Constituency. I especially send our condolences to the House, whose Leader Olawoyin was until his death this morning.

“We will miss in him a grassroots politician, a core party man, and a great lawmaker, who truly distinguished himself as the Leader of the 9th House of Assembly,” the governor stated through his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye.

He prayed God to forgive and grant Olawoyin “al-Jannah Firdaus” and comfort his family.
