Labour Party’s Julius Abure released hours after arrest

The national chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has been released from police detention, hours after he was arrested in Edo state.

Abure’s release was confirmed by Labour Party in a video on their X handle. The video shows Abure addressing his supporters.

The part’s presidential candidate in the last general elections, Peter Obi, called the arrest “distasteful” and “demeaning”.

Abure, alongside four others, was arrested by a combine team of the Police and Department of State Services (DSS).

Spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force Zone 5, Tijani Momoh, said Abure was arrested for attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and related offences.

Speaking with his party members after his release, Abure appreciated them for the solidarity, the support and commitment, stating no struggle to liberate a country comes easy.

“Many countries of the world where freedom fighters have fought for the emancipation of the people, freedom fighters suffer injustice, suffer prosecution and it is what is happening to me and my other colleagues since after the general elections.”

Abure claimed that after the general elections there have been attempts to instigate crisis in the party.

“They have come to talk about forgery at a time, when, it didn’t work they came with embezzlement,” he said.

“Anybody that is aggrieved within the party they go and instigate them to write petition and to make trouble.”
