Lagos moves to increase access to Omu Creeks

Ongoing works at Omu Creeks Road

Pledges early completion of Alapere pedestrian bridge

Lagos State government has concluded plans for a road and bridge project that would link Sangotedo in Eti Osa Local Council with Ito-Omu Creek in Ibeju Lekki and Epe Local Council of the state.

Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Office of Infrastructure) Mr Olufemi Daramola, disclosed this during an inspection of ongoing projects across the state.

The Omu Creek link project is located along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. He said: “The Omu Creek Road is one of the strategic projects that is ongoing. It’s a road that has a total of about 5km and about 600 meters of bridge.

“About 1.1km from the Lekki-Epe road, what we have witnessed is big progress. There’s been a lot of soil reclamation; a lot of soil replacement has gone on.

“We will be able to get to the appointment stage where the bridge work will start. A lot of soil investigation is going on, and the progress is very commendable. With the way it is, we will see more progress in recent times,” he said. On the Ketu Alapere pedestrian bridge reconstruction project, Daramola said it would be completed in a few months.

The damaged bridge, which was constructed 11 years ago, was pulled down by the impact of a container-laden truck, that tried to manoeuvre under the bridge, bearing a load that was far beyond the provided headroom.

“The repair of the damaged Alapere pedestrian bridge is ongoing. You will recall that when the incident occurred, there was a lot of work on the alignment. The Federal Government was working on the Third Mainland Bridge, and we had to synchronise the work.

“However, there’s good progress. The foundation is done and the cast elements are all being set off-site. The headroom will be improved, and in another couple of months, two or three months, I’m sure that the project will be completed.” He added: “The state is also working on the network of roads in Ikoyi Abayomi, MacPherson, Ilabere. Site visit shows that there’s improvement.

“Contractors are on site, and we’re having good mileage. At the end of that exercise, it will be in line with our regeneration of those areas.”
