Lagos receives draft of Badagry master plan, approves Ikorodu sub-regional plan

The Lagos State government has received the final draft report of the Badagry Master Plan, which will engender inclusive development and growth in the Badagry corridor.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, who received the document from Messrs Vista Plan Consulting in Alausa, said that the submission of the report signaled the completion stage of the project.

According to him, bringing the project to a conclusion requires the validation of the report by stakeholders through a 28-day public display and meeting to allow for further inputs and production of a 20-year plan.

Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Oluwole Sotire, said the review was one of many physical development plans being prepared by the Sanwo-Olu administration to guide the development of the state. “We have always ensured that the preparation of development plans is done in consonance with people’s inputs, and the review of the Badagry Master Plan is no exception,” he said.

Also speaking, Wale Alade of Vista Consulting said the firm identified major gaps in the expired plan, embarked on the collation of inception report and conducted stakeholders/community engagements, as well as identified action areas and prescribed implementation strategies.

As part of efforts to address physical development challenges, the Lagos State government has released the Ikorodu sub-region master plan to stakeholders for implementation.

The State’s Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, who spoke during the official handover of the document in Ikorodu, acknowledged the support of leaders and people of Ikorodu division to make the document come into reality.

The commissioner said that the master plan would guide physical development in the axis until its expiration in 2036, focusing on key areas of land use, transportation, physical and socio-economic infrastructure and environmental management.


Olumide further disclosed that the master plan was aimed at sustainable development of the sub-region and officers of the ministry, both at the district level and headquarters, would be responsive to the needs of the people regarding its use.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Oluwole Sotire, noted that adherence to the prescriptions of the document would engender an organised, orderly, livable, and sustainable physical environment in the sub-region.

The Director, Regional and Master Plan in the Office of Physical Planning, Kunle Salami, who gave a synopsis of the project, said that the planned duration of the Ikorodu Sub-Region Master Plan was 2016 – 2036, but the untimely demise of a leading member of the consultants, Messrs City Scape Planning Services, delayed the completion of the project.

Representative of the Consultant for the project, Kamil Sanni, emphasised the participatory models, such as focus group discussions and several stakeholders’ engagements, were adopted in preparing the master plan with the support of the royal fathers, leaders and people of the area.

The traditional ruler of the area, Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Adewale Shotobi, who symbolically received the planning document from the Commissioner, commended the government for its inteBadagry Master Planrest in the Ikorodu sub-region and acknowledged the fact that the master plan was prepared in consultation with the people.
