Lagos seals Jumia outlet for illegal sewage disposal

Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) said it sealed a Jumia outlet located on Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, on Thursday for illegally discharging raw sewage into the environment.

The state commissioner of the environment and water, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Wahab said the Jumia facility used a submersible pump to bypass its sewage holding tanks and discharge untreated wastewater directly into nearby drainage channels and road setbacks.

He said the property owners would be prosecuted under the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management Protection Law, 2017.

This closure comes as part of the Lagos State Government’s intensified efforts to ensure rigorous waste sanitation across the state, particularly in public spaces like markets.

These efforts aim to ensure the suitability of these spaces for business activities and the safety of all residents. Numerous markets that failed to adhere to the state’s environmental laws and regulations have been temporarily closed.

Recently, the state government sealed Katangua market in Abule Egba and Oke Afa market in Isolo for severe environmental sanitation violations.

Other notable closures in Lagos Mainland include Oyingbo and Alayabiagba markets, while Alade market in Ikeja was also shut down.

In 2023, markets like Alaba International, ASPAMDA, Oke-Odo, Ladipo, Mile 12, and Owode Onirin were among those shuttered in Lagos due to environmental concerns.
