Lagos State govt approves 40% rebate on payment for planning permit, duties

.Says 24,000 approvals granted in five years, 300 distressed buildings demolished

Lagos State Government, yesterday, announced a 40 per cent rebate on payment of duties and planning approvals.

It also disclosed that over 24,000 planning permit approvals were granted in the last five years in the state.
The state’s Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, who spoke during a media briefing to mark the first year of the second term in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the move was to encourage property owners in the state to do the right thing by ensuring that their property pass all official procedures.

Olumide reaffirmed that the governor had granted a 90-day amnesty period for owners/developers of existing property to regularise their property and help in promoting sustainable physical environment.

He also said that the amnesty initiative would allow owners and developers of existing buildings to obtain planning permits without the payment of statutory penal fees within the amnesty window from May 2 to July 30, 2024, with a five per cent discount applicable to payments completed within 10 working days of the bill’s issuance.

The commissioner described the incentives as a relief measure to mitigate the effects of the current economic hardship being experienced in the building industry.

He, however, warned that non-compliance would draw the wrath of the government that is positioned to do what is good for Lagos residents, adding that the administration will not compromise the safety of every individual in the state.

Meanwhile, the state government, yesterday, revealed that over 300 distressed buildings were demolished in the last year.

Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde, disclosed this at the media briefing.
According to Babatunde, 354 distressed buildings were identified with 85 per cent of the structures removed.

He said the task of removing others would be completed in days ahead.

Also, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, disclosed that plans were already completed to relocate residents of Jakande Estate, Adeniji Adele, to redevelop the estate.

He said the relocation and redevelopment of the estate would be done in batches, but about 900 buildings would be involved.
