Lagos State govt, Ghanaian firm sign MoU to expand waste management space

LASEMA partners FMIL on safety along Lagos Red Line
Lagos State government, yesterday, commenced plans to expand its waste management and treatment horizon by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Ghana-based firm, Jospong Group of Companies.

The Guardian gathered that under the MoU, the firm would establish a material recovery facility to reduce downstream pressure (waste disposal volume) at landfills and build compact/mobile transfer loading stations to replace the current stationary plants and reduce waste at pressure points (markets).

The firm will also repurpose the current Olusosun landfill (MRF plant), supply of self-tipping tricycles to augment transfer and loading station operations and build bin manufacturing and plastic recycling plant to streamline recyclable activities.

The state’s Commissioner for the Environment & Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who spoke at the ceremony at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, noted the challenges of solid and liquid waste management in a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos.

According to him, with a vibrant population, bustling markets, and dynamic industries, the state generates substantial amounts of waste that require innovative and sustainable management solutions.

Wahab, who noted the government’s responsibility as stewards of the city’s future to address the challenges head-on, said that the Ghanaian firm would not compete with home players but focus on waste management and treatment as well as strengthening waste collection if the needs arise by providing equipment and technical support.

He said: “Today marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards transforming the landscape of waste management in Lagos State.”

In his response, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghanaian firm, Dr Joseph Slaw Agyepong, said the partnership was an affirmation of the cordial relationship that had existed between Nigeria and Ghana, which also consummates the ECOWAS Commission’s vision and ultimately the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He promised effective and efficient waste management between his firm and Lagos State government through the Ministry of the Environment.

The MoU signing ceremony, held at the LASEMA Control Centre in Alausa, marked a pivotal moment in ensuring the security and well-being of commuters utilising the Red Line.

Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, who hailed the MoU as a remarkable achievement under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasized the importance of the collaboration in ensuring safety protocols along the Red Line.
