Lagos State health commissioner Akin Abayomi

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has said that the state is working to become top five African city with best healthcare by 2025.

Abayomi, who disclosed this, yesterday, during the 2024 yearly conference and general meeting organised by Health Federation of Nigeria (HFN), in Lagos, said: “As to the importance of the private sector and our donor-partners that help us to reach and achieve Universal Healthcare Coverage, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has given the Ministry of Health certain mandates and these are clearly outlined in Lagos State’s 30-year development plan.

“It started last year and will run till 2052. It clearly states that in 30 years, Lagos State is to achieve complete universal healthcare coverage and should be in the top-five cities in Africa with the best healthcare system and be one of the top centres for medical tourism.”

“In other words, people should be coming to Lagos to receive both basic and sophisticated healthcare services.

“This is the second year of the 30-year plan that Lagos is already beginning to achieve that status. We have been rated the eighth best city in Africa by the healthcare system.”

Abayomi, who spoke on the theme of the conference, “Bridging the Gap: Public-Private Integration as a Catalyst for Sustainable Growth,” stressed the role of collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving sustainable healthcare development.

He applauded the private sector for contributing to the city’s healthcare system.
