Landscape architects applauds FCTA’s efforts in restoring Abuja’s green spaces

The Society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria, represented by its President, Mr. Amos Alao, commended the dedication of Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, in restoring the Green Areas designated in the Abuja Master Plan.


Mr. Alao expressed satisfaction at the transformation of areas previously used for parking into lush green spaces along road shoulders across various districts and some parks have regained their original intent. He also emphasized the importance of involving Landscape Architects in the FCT Minister’s Urban Renewal initiatives, restoration of the Abuja Master Plan as well as ecological remediation initiatives.

Highlighting the critical role of trees as the lungs of the city, Mr. Alao underscored the significance of reducing the carbon footprint by increasing the city’s tree cover. He cautioned that it’s not merely about planting trees but selecting species that thrive within the ecosystem. Furthermore, he emphasized that green spaces enhance city resiliencex, mental health and promote biodiversity.

The Society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria looks forward to continuing collaboration with government efforts to enhance Abuja’s environmental sustainability and urban aesthetic.
