Catch Up On Events That Happened Last Week

It’s music season and depends on the side of the coin you are looking at, the way the reality hits you hard is the same.

True, there were several stories surrounding artistes, but each story has pointed to one thing- chances and change are constant. From the sad case of grace to grass to authorities making decisions for humans.

Catch up on all the trendy stories that made our week:

Rolling success
A few days after Nigerian-International singer Wizkid said he is not the best in the music game, one of his songs has proven him wrong (well, positively). The track, “Essence” featuring fast-rising singer Tems, is the “most Shazamed” song in the United States. The song is off his fourth studio album “Made In Lagos” released in October. This is not the first feat that the song has achieved. It is the first Nigerian song in history to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. It was also listed in former US president Barack Obama’s favourite songs of 2020.

Donda
Still on music, the long-awaited Kanye West album, Donda, is finally here. The 27-track album is West’s tenth album following 2019’s “Jesus Is King.” First, we have to commend West for the marketing genius strategy of the album named after his mother, Donda West. After selling over $7million dollars in merchandise ahead of the album, the song is also the first this year to garner over 60 million streams in the U.S. on Apple Music in the first 24 hours.
However, the release of the album was not without controversies: the choice of DaBaby in a song (titled Jail) that originally featured Jay-Z, and Universal Music Group releasing the album without his approval.

Cold seasons
Barely 48 hours after Nigerian rapper, Vic O, declared bankruptcy and publicly asked Nigerians for help, tragedy struck. The heartbroken rapper took to social media to announce the death of his father. He said, “I am bankrupt right now which I have not settled yet, which I am trying to figure out. Which I am going to settle in, yet dead has the mind to take my dad away.” Many Nigerians have been responded to his double tragedy by rendering support. Vic O, at the peak of his career (2015-2016), described himself as the “best rapper in the world”. In an interview, he claimed that Jay Z called him. He also released a track to end the careers of Drake and Meek Mill.

Restrictions
China announced a drastic cut to children’s online gaming time to just three hours a week during term time, a move to crackdown on tech giants in the world’s biggest gaming market. Gamers under 18 will only be allowed to play online between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm on weekends. Gamers are required to use their ID cards when registering to play online. On school holidays, children will be allowed to play a little longer, with the allocated time set at 60 minutes per day. “Gaming addiction has affected studies and normal life… and many parents have become miserable,” the National Press and Publication Administration gave as its reason.

Confessions
A man walked for one week to a village to confess to a triple murder during a drunken dispute on a reindeer farm in a forest in Russia. The unnamed man and an acquaintance had started arguing while drinking on the farm. The man then shot dead his acquaintance as well as two women, the committee statement said without giving many details. “Due to the farm’s remote location and the lack of transport options, the man walked for a week to the village of Okhotsk, where he turned himself into the police and reported that he had committed the crimes,” the statement said by the Investigative Committee in Russia said. The man has since been detained.
